There are currently no plans to issue NGSWs to non-combatants. Soldiers in fields other than those assigned to or assigned to a direct combat unit will continue to use the M4 and M249 SAW variants, Burris said.

Over the next 10 years, the Army could order 107,000 rifles and 13,000 assault rifles, Burris said.
