JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - The US 128th Aviation Brigade at Fort Eustis; Va. It trains and educates U.S. soldiers to maintain and operate some of the most effective combat helicopters in use today.

Influential Civilians Get 'exciting' Visit To Tradoc, Fort Eustis

Training conducted in its classrooms and simulators provides the starting point for ongoing training to ensure helicopter readiness and strategic success.

Students will learn about the Boeing AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter (AH-64) armament; electricity During 24 weeks of initial training, students learn the building blocks of the 15Y MOS, which is responsible for avionics systems and maintenance work. The classroom structure begins with an in-depth classroom curriculum, which students later apply during hands-on training with simulators in the hangar bay.

That said, Jared Blacketer is assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade as a 15Y-10 Level Instructor, giving new Soldiers their first steps in becoming proficient maintainers of Apache-class helicopters.

"If they don't get a realistic look, when they report to the units, they're not going to implement anything," Blacketer said. "So both the classroom theory and the trainers have to use this practical experience to get them ready for their first duty camp."

These future maintainers will be responsible for identifying repairs and solving problems with the AH-64. This includes preventive maintenance and timely documentation of repairs and safety checks to ensure that all weapons systems and other electronic equipment are operating properly.

"We're following up on these helicopters to maintain them, and we definitely need to know everything about them before we go into the field," said Pfc. Brady Peckinpaugh, a student assigned to the unit. "That way, once we get to our service centers, we can accelerate a lot of the processes that we learn here."

"My confidence is growing a lot, and I'm working with one of the coolest helicopters we have to offer," Peckinpaugh said. "There's not a lot of work that can overcome this type of aircraft, so there's definitely a little bit of an increase."

In modern warfare, technology is evolving and more training and education is required for these soldiers to succeed in the mission.

"As an airframe maintainer, It doesn't matter what the airframe is; I'm always learning and always making updates for new software or equipment installations, so I keep training. There's always an opportunity to learn more,” Blacketer said. “I've been doing this for 12 years. Even after initial training here, I am constantly learning. I didn't master it right away, but I came out here with the basic building blocks and motivation to learn more to make sure I succeed."

Some course modules challenge students with factors that go beyond manuals and hardware. In some cases they will be challenged by time and their environment.

"Weapons system, Things like gun turret systems and ammunition handling systems are not easy for students to complete and take many hours,” Blacketer said. "They're starting to see some of the challenges their 15Y retainers face when they're anxious to get the job done."

The US has more than 1,200 Apache helicopters in its inventory. With a top speed of 227 miles per hour and a weight of over 11,000 pounds, it gives soldiers something unique.

"I found this course to be more fun than a standard job, so it wasn't too stressful," Packinpaugh said. "Our sergeants and civilians here are very knowledgeable and they have taught me a lot," he said. So we are grateful to the teachers who taught us. I teach subjects in different ways to help them learn and see things differently without having to invent their own way."

"When these Soldiers leave here, I hope they learn more and have the dedication to really care about their job," Blacketer said. “To make them better custodians; I want to be motivated to learn other systems and become better experts with the entire aircraft.”
